Coton du Tulear puppyDogs - Coton du Tulear Breed

The origin of the Coton du Tulear is Madagascar
It is 10 to 12 inches tall, weighs and weighs 13-18 lbs.

The Coton de Tulear is a relatively rare and relatively old pure breed, originating from Madagascar.

This is a small white companion dog with fluffy cotton like hair, hence the name "Coton."

Tulear is on the southwestern coast of Madagascar (a port city).

The standard for the Coton de Tulear was really developed early on, but was officially created in 1969.  It was submitted to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 1970. The FCI officially recognized the breed in February 1971. Coton du Tulear puppies

By 1974, the first Cotons were brought to North America, there has been a definite increase in popularity of Cotons in both the United States and in Canada.

Coton sittingCotons come in three different color varieties: White; Black-and-white; and Tri-color. A Tri-color adult Coton is mostly white with pinkish patches and a faint dusting of black hairs.

The Coton du Tulear has a charming personality.  This is great, because it means that Cotons maintain a puppy-like disposition their whole lives.

In appearance, the Coton looks somewhat like a child's stuffed animal toy.  This is one of the reason people love Cotons.  They have been described as "Miniature Old English Sheepdogs."

Cotons are intelligent, devoted, eager to please, relatively easy to train, and sturdy. One nice thing about Cotons are that they are an excellent companion for children, and, generally speaking, Cotons gets along well with other dogs and cats. Coton du Tulear walking

The Coton will adapt to just about any lifestyle. Known as a bundle of joy with the nickname: "the anti-stress dog."

Health Issues:

The Coton du Tulear breed is healthy, vigorous, and, for a small dog, is relatively long-lived.  These dogs have an average life expectancy of about 16 years. According to the Coton de Tulear Club of America, the North American population of Cotons have no known genetic defects.
