Dogs - Afghan Hound BreedThe Afghan Hound is a sighthound with a somewhat proper standing. This is a tall and slender breed, that has a long, narrow, refined head, silky topknot and powerful jaws. The long, rich, silky coat of an Afghan Hound is most often the color of sand with a darker face and ear fringes, though all colors are permitted. The Afghan Hound is dignified, somewhat
aloof, but very sweet, loyal, affectionate and sensitive. Afghan Hounds must be trained kindly. The Afghan has been described as "a king of dogs." Majestic, elegant, noble and courageous, suspicious of, but not hostile to, strangers. Although tough, Afghan hounds will become sad if they are deprived of attention. They will do best with older, considerate children. At one time, the breed had a reputation for being untrustworthy, but has now been replaced by a character that, while still spirited, is said to be more amenable to training and discipline, as they can be disobedient if it is poorly trained. This breed can be difficult to housebreak. Some are timid and high strung. Height: Living Conditions Exercise The Life Expectancy for Afghan hounds is about 14 years. The long, thick coat of an Afghan hound demands a great deal of attention. If your Afghan is a pet and will not be shown, then you don't need to bathe that often, but doing so will make the coat less matted and will save you time in the end. Origin Afghan Hounds were seemingly kept pure for centuries, and its exportation was always prohibited. It therefore only reached Europe as contraband early in the 20th century. This elegant hound was used as a shepherd and hunter of many types of game including deer, wild goats, and even wolves and snow leopards. Afghan hounds were also used by shepherds as herders and watchdogs. An extremely fast and agile runner, the Afghan Hound pursues game by sight. The thick coat of the Afghan hound protects against temperature extremes. In Europe and America he has become a luxurious pet because of his aristocratic beauty. Some of the Afghan's talents are hunting, sighting, tracking, herding, watchdogging, racing, and lure coursing. A slightly different take on the history of the Afghan Hound is that the country of origin is Afghanistan. One of the oldest breeds, dating back thousands of years, the Afghan Hound is a member of the Greyhound family. Their ancestors are originally from Persia moving to Afghanistan where they worked protecting sheep and cattle. Afghans were once a harsh hunter in their native land where they were used to hunt leopard, wolves and jackals. They have now been bred to be an obedient, gentle dog. The Afghan Hound was introduced into Western civilization late in the nineteenth century. Much credit to the breed is given to Major Amps and his wife Mary who while living in Ghazni, Afghanistan established their kennel "Ghazni". Mary also did much research and writing on the breed. Their hounds are found in most American Afghan Hound pedigrees.
